Circular
of Velouchi
Starting
up from Karpenisi and after having taken the road to Agrinio,
one comes across with the junction to Stenoma after three
kilometres. Turning to the right and after five kilometres
one reaches the location "Margarita". Close enough
is Saint Athanasios Chappel and the "Kara-Amet"
spring. One can also see the "Zigos"; a church built
of stone, dedicated to the memory of Kosmas Aitolos. Going
on there is a place called Stenoma. Opposite to the village
there is "Tourla", a high-ground where ruins of
ceramics indicate an ancient city.
The next village is Pavlopoulo. Located in a magnificent wooded
landscape, it is a typical evritanic village where one can
visit the old church Saint Dimitrios which dates back to 1666.
Afterwards there is Papadia village. Here we can see the old
church of Saint Ioannes Chrisostomos which dates back to the
15th century. On a picture of the temple the date of 1757
is written while on an other is that of 1707. After Papadia
the way leads to Domiani where the little church of Panagia
lies with its interesting frescos and excellent pictures which
date back to 1787. Going on one can find Agia Triada, a village
hidden in a wood of chestnut trees. It is located in the northern
foot of Velouchi Mountain, close enough to the back part of
the ski-center.
This is where a famous school of greek literacy operated during
the years before the Greek Revolution (1779). Leaving Agia
Triada village one can make for the Sermitzelis ridge. From
there one can head for Fournas; the second bigger municipality
in Evritania. This is the place where Dionysios from Fournas
(1670-1745) founded a remarkable school in which many students
attended. One of them was Kosmas Aitolos too.
From Fournas one can follow the way to Bracha so as to admire
the spectacular Convent called "Metamorphosis Sotiros"
which had been renovated in 1745. There are frescos and pictures
still kept in excellent condition.
Afterwards there is Klitsos village and the renowned convent
"Koritsa" where the relics of Loucas the Evangelist
are kept. From Sermitzelis ridge we can also make for Karditsa
or Lamia going down the northeastern part of Timphristos Mountain.
But we continue our route heading to Saint Elias and then
to Saints Apostoli; an area of astonishing view. Finally we
reach Karpenisi from the opposite side of the ridge.
Karpenisi-Potamia-Prousos
Following
this route one can visit the Convent of Prousos too, a pilgrimage
place where people gather from all over Greece, specially
in the 23th of August; at the feast-day. To reach Prousos
one can take the way to Potamia, that fertile area where Karpenisiotis
river flows. The first village on our way is Gavros.
Going on one passes by the place called "Kleidi"
and then reaches the "River's Home". From that point
one can see the "Tipoma"; a hole on the opposite
mountain-top through which is believed that Our Lady's wonder-working
picture has run on its way to the Convent.
Not far from that point there is a little picture where "Our
Lady's footprints" are. These consist an uncommon and
inexplicable, according to many people, geological phenomenon.
Right upon the vertical rock and embodied to it one can see
six to seven figures of different colour which look like footprints.
It is believed that right through this point Our Lady passed
on her way to "Tipoma" and then to Prousos. The
silver cover of the icon is a gift from Karaiskakis; one of
the heros of the Greek Revolution's period, who used to stay
in Prousos from time to time in order to recover from his
illness. Inside the Convent one can find an interesting museum
with many exhibits. A lot of disasters threatened the Convent
and many invaders have burned it down in the past, including
the Germans in the 16th of August 1944. The "All Saints"
church which is opposite to the Convent is built in 1754.
One can also visit the Convent's Clock.
Interesting sightseeings in Prousos include the towers of
Karaiskakis as long as the place called "Dark Cave".
It takes thirty minutes to get there from the village passing
through little ponds, clear brooks and wooded enviroment.
Two other sites which are remarkable to visit are "Agathidios"
Library where rare editions are kept and "Katsampio"
Highschool. On our return one passes through "Kleidi"
point, that wild awe-inspiring ravine reaching the junction
of the villages "Mikro" and "Megalo chorio".
Taking the left street we head for "Mikro Chorio",
a hospitable village, located in a wooded area. Afterwards
we can find the old "Mikro Chorio" where a landslide
happened on November 1962. This is where a marvellous little
lake is being formed during the Springtime. At the central
square of the village one can see the five old and picturesque
springs. If one coming from Prousos village turns on the right
it is easy to get to "Megalo Chorio". Astonishing
water sources, tall firs and typical country houses describe
the village.
Not to far from that place, close to "Aniada" village
there is an area called "Lakomata" where one can
visit a monumentum dedicated to the battle named "Kaliakouda"
which took place on 28th of August 1823, along with a picturesque
little church. Going on one passes through "Boutiros",
a typical Evritanic village where the largest church of the
prefecture is hidden in a wooded location. After having enjoyed
the view from the central square of the village one gets to
"Klafsi" or "Klafsion" village. It is
believed that this place had once been the capital of Evritania.
Judging from the old church of "Saint Leonidis"
which dates back to the early years of christianism, it is
assumed that it must have been an important religious center
during those years.
After that one visits "Mousilo" village and its
old churches which date back to 1650 and 1700, as long as
the two villages named "Aniada" and "Sigrelo".
Following the main avenue to Karpenisi one visits "Koritsades";
a village where the "National Resisting Movement's"
Museum, an old convent (1650), and ancient runs of a tower,
of graves and of an old gun-fuctory exist. In a short distance
before reaching Karpenisi one can get uphill to "Georgianades"
village
Karpenisi - "Kremaston"
lake -"Tatarna" Convent
Having taken the way to Agrinio and after 8 kilometers, one
turns on the left to the villages "Stefani", "Sella",
"Milia", "Fidakia", "Agia vlacherna".
Going on this way one can enjoy the view to tha artificial
lake "Kremaston". "Fidakia" is the prettiest
village in Evritania; stone-houses, cobbled roads, paved streets.
This is where ancient Ichalia was, according to researches.
Close to the village, in an area called "Kastri"
one can see the ruins of an ancient settlement. Leaving the
village, in a place called "Tsagaralona" one can
enjoy the marvellous view to "Kremaston" lake. This
is where a traveller can have some rest as there are a spring
and a number of stone seats. Taking a magnificent route (dirtroad)
and passing through the ruins of an ancient castle one heads
for "Agia Vlacherna" village. Coming back to the
main avenue and changing destination to the west one can take
the dirtroad to "Parousi" village, the "Saint
Paraskevi" church and the chapel "Metamorphosi Sotiros".
Next village is "Kalesmeno" where one can visit
many Byzantine finds, an old fort's ruins and unexplored ancient
graves which are in "Aroniada" settlement.
Coming by the iron-bridge of "Megdova" or "Tavropos"
River one can turn to the steep road on the right which leads
to a bridge called "Vinani". Before reaching eastern
Fragista, there is a bypass which is on the left of the highway
that leads to the settlements called "Marathia".
After that there is a location called "Sotira".
There is an old church called "Metamorphosi Sotiros"
which is known for its excellent frescos. The church had been
renovated in 1725.
The next village is weastern Fragista, one of the largest
in the prefecture. Before reaching the "Kremaston"
artificial lake there are tha villages "Agios georgios",
"Paleochori", "Neochori". These are located
in one of the most beautiful areas in Evritania, by the famous
lake. The next village is "Episkopi". It has been
sank into the lake's water and has been reconstructed somewhere
else. One of the most remarkable sightseeings in Evritania
is "Tatarna" Convent. After visiting the convent
one can go uphill to the northwestern Evritania at the villages
named "Palaiokatouna", "Boulpi", "Valaora",
"Topoliana", "Raptopoulo" and "Prasia".
If the lake is not in a very high level it is not difficult
to see the old bridge called "Manoli's" which had
been connecting the two banks of the river for over 300 years.
In Valaora one can visit the two castles which are dated back
to the years before christianism. In Prasia there is the cypress
under which according to the tradition, Kosmas Aitolos forsaw
that the day of the Greek Liberation would come when the top
of the tip would start going wilt. It still remains with its
top wilted! An ancient settlement dated back to the prehistorical
era has been also found there.

Karpenisi
- Agrafa
A really
pure and spotless nature, yet totally unexploited, lies in
central-western Evritania, between the "Megdova"
and "Tavropos" Rivers. This is where the mountain
block of Agrafa is, a really in accessible area which is still
difficult to reach. On the way to Agrinio and after having
passed through the iron-bridge of "Megdova", one
can turn to the right, on the junction to "Kerasochori"
village. From there, leaving historical Viniani behind, one
can reach a new junction. Turning on the right there is "Dafni"
village, while after some kilometres, on the left one can
head for "Chriso" village. Chriso is one of the
most representative agrafian villages with an interesting
history. On the way one comes by imposing ravines and rough
precipices. Then one can see a marvellous little church dedicated
to Saint "Serafim Koronis" which is built into a
rough rock's niche. On the right one can see two old little
bridges which were leading to the village, built in a fine
constructive way. The seven springs of the village, with their
odd arches are reminiscent of the past as it is obvious that
they are constructed in an Arabic manner or at least in a
style influenced by the Mistra's old technique. Our Lady's
temple has a woodcarved icon screen similar to that of "Sotiras"
church in eastern Fragista.
Leaving Chriso one heads for "Kerasochori" village.
It is a big village which consists the centre of all the other
villages as long as the main point on our way to Agrafa. After
that one can head to the north, to "Marathos" village
where the chieftain Katsantonis was born. Going on one can
reach Agrafa and then "Bragiana" village. This is
where Eugenious Aitolos founded a school in 1662. One can
also see the little church "Agia Paraskevi" and
its icons dated back to 1647, along with a spring called "Fontana".
After Bragiana there is "Trobato" village; the northern
evritanian part.
Karpenisi-Domnista
The route
to Domnista is full of interesting historical sites and sightseeings.
Taking the former way to Lamia and after six kilometres the
first village is on the way; "Agios Nikolaos" which
is located in a deep chestnut-trees and firs forest. The chappel
called "Agia Paraskevi" is worthseeing. On the top
of the ridge one can turn on the right. On the way there is
the renowned area called "Kokkalia" where the conflict
between the Aitolians, Evritanians and took place in 279 b.C.
The first village is "Krikello" which is the headquarters
of Domnista's Municipality. It is located in a magnificent,
unique fir forests enviroment with rare aromatic plants and
shady plane-trees that grow close to Krikelopotamos river.
Going on there is Domnista, one of the largest villages in
Evritania. The Folklore and Historical Museum's old exhibits
and photographic archives are of great interest. Ancient "Fantinos",
the main ancient settlement in Evritania is also located in
Domnista. Following this particular route one can also visit
the villages "Stavli" and "Ambliani".
The last one has a name for its blanket's production and a
number of historical churches. A stalactite and stalagmite
cave was also found in "Mesokomi" site located in
a ridge in "Karfoptelia" mountain. "Roska"
village is where the ravine named "Pantavrechi"
is located along with the fabulous waterfalls the suspended
bridge and the renowned river "Krikelopotamos".
Several households, ancient items were found in "Psiana"
village, close to "Zagora" location, along with
earthenware jars, oil-lamps, tiles crumbs, etc.
